Over the years La Joya ISD and the Board of Trustees has worked diligently to ensure that the health and safety of our students and staff remains the District’s top priority. Recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Uvalde ISD tragedy have underscored the need for public schools to strengthen and enhance health and safety measures that ensure students and staff have a safe and secure learning environment.
It’s these policy considerations that led La Joya ISD to decide against opening our classrooms for voting locations to the general public – our goal is to minimize traffic and visitors to our schools of all non-essential and non-educational related activities. Our schools should first and foremost be places of education where students and staff are safe.
As for the decision to select voting sites throughout the County, the District was required by law to enter into a Joint-Election agreement with Hidalgo County whereby the District would use the
County voting locations. The Board of Trustees on September 30, 2022, proposed using other
public spaces, like municipal libraries, as alternatives to our classrooms. The goal of the Board
